The Greening of American Sports Stadiums October 17, 2010

It's football season and on this edition of GreenSense, Robert Colangelo looks at how sports stadiums are becoming more environmentally friendly. Sporting events can generate tremendous amounts of waste: during Super Bowl XXXII in Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, 70 tons of trash was generated by 68 thousand fans. What are architects, engineers and stadium operators doing to reduce the waste created by 20 million sports fans each year?

Robert's guests include:

Brian Swanson, Office of Budget & Finance with the University of Minnesota

Last year, the Golden Gophers hosted home football games at the new TCF Bank Stadium, the first LEED certified professional or college stadium in country.

Stephanie Katsaros, Sustainability Consultant Allstate Arena

This 18-thousand-seat arena is host to numerous sporting events and other live entertainment. Find out how this existing structure has re-engineered their daily operations to become not only more environmentally friendly, but more profitable.
